About
As part of the 20th anniversary of the inscription of Provins on the World Heritage List, the municipality of Provins invites you to a unique and very complete exhibition entitled "Provins and the Champagne Fairs, from the origins to the inscription on the World Heritage List"!
Proposed by the museum of Provins and the Provinois area and the Society of History and Archaeology of the District of Provins, it will present a large choice of original archive documents.
Provins is one of the four cities of the County of Champagne (with Troyes, Lagny and Bar-sur-Aube) where were held, between the eleventh and fourteenth century, these great annual trade fairs that put in contact the northern Europe with the Mediterranean world.
But it is the only one to have admirably preserved the architecture and urbanism that characterized these large cities, what earned it to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 13 December 2001!
International recognition as the birthplace of European trade and a major financial center in the 12th and 13th centuries.
