About
Since its inception, La Croix d'Or has never changed its function, making it the oldest inn in France, and it is listed as such in the Guinness Book of Records.
Construction of La Croix d'Or began in 1264 and was completed in 1270 upon the death of Saint Louis. An oak forest was cleared for its construction.
Viollet-le-Duc's Medieval Encyclopedia:
Excerpt from page 561:
Fig. 16 reproduces the facade of one of these houses in Provins, facing the Rue de Paris and dating from the second half of the 13th century.
The main hall and the bedrooms are on the first floor.
The ground floor is reserved for common areas, provisions, and the kitchen.
The upper floors are high: one senses that life in these dwellings was simple and spacious.
