About
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Saint Hubert church of Les Marêts has an architecture of the 16th and 18th centuries, unique in the Île-de-France region!
It was built from 1560 on an ancient chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert, as a reward for the loyalty to the King of France of the Dauvet family, lords of Les Marêts and Grand Fauconniers de France.
Composed from west to east, of a porch bell tower, a rotunda nave and a choir, it is very different from the Latin cross churches of the Middle Ages.
Indeed, the church of Saint-Hubert des Marêts is built according to a centred plan, covered with an external dome, with a beautiful vault all dressed in wood inside.
Originating from the Renaissance, these architectural features are very original, especially for a rural church!
It is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and to Saint Hubert, patron saint of hunters.
Inside you will have the chance to see three late 15th century polychrome wooden statues of Saint Hubert kneeling between his horse and a stag carrying a crucifix between his antlers, most likely from an altarpiece.
Many adventures surround this treasure stolen in 1968, and which was found in Paris in 2006, at the Hôtel de Vente Drouot, almost 40 years later!
A doubly happy ending as in addition to the restitution, a formidable restoration was carried out on all the statues.
We invite you to discover all the details of this incredible story during your visit…
Starting from the church, go for a walk to discover the surrounding countryside on “The warlords’ watch“, a 20.6 km loop.
There is also a city stadium next door which is freely accessible to all.
